Two separate issues live in this question: lactose, which is a comfort problem, and xylitol, which is not.
Xylitol is the emergency
AKC warns that xylitol causes a rapid insulin release in dogs and a dangerous fall in blood sugar. Weakness, staggering, collapse, and seizures are the signs owners are told to watch for.
“Light,” “diet,” and “no added sugar” are the words that should make you read the ingredient list. If xylitol is on it, do not share the tub, and call if the dog already had some.
Lactose is the comfort issue
Most adult dogs produce little lactase. Fermentation lowers the lactose in yogurt compared with milk, which is why some dogs handle it better, but it does not remove it.
Gas, loose stool, and a gurgling belly a few hours later are the usual signals that this dog should not have dairy. That is information, not an emergency.
