How Australian Shepherds grow
Tireless herding dog for active owners. As a large breed, a Australian Shepherd is roughly half grown at about 5 months and reaches adult size at around 14 to 16 months. Mini Aussies are a different size class (20 to 40 lb), so choose a medium or small size in the calculator for them.
Feed a Australian Shepherd puppy a food labeled for large-breed puppies (or "all life stages including growth of large size dogs"). These foods control calcium and calories so bones grow at a steady pace, which lowers the risk of hip and elbow problems.
Is my Australian Shepherd puppy underweight or overweight?
The scale only tells half the story. Check your puppy's body condition: you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, and see a waist when you look down from above. A puppy that tracks low on the chart but has good energy and body condition is usually just going to be a smaller adult. Talk to your vet if your puppy stops gaining for more than two weeks, loses weight, or has persistent diarrhea.
