How Golden Retrievers grow
Gentle, eager to please and great with children. As a large breed, a Golden Retriever is roughly half grown at about 5 months and reaches adult size at around 12 to 18 months. Goldens fill out (chest and coat) well into their second year even after their height stops changing.
Feed a Golden Retriever puppy a food labeled for large-breed puppies (or "all life stages including growth of large size dogs"). These foods control calcium and calories so bones grow at a steady pace, which lowers the risk of hip and elbow problems.
Is my Golden Retriever puppy underweight or overweight?
The scale only tells half the story. Check your puppy's body condition: you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, and see a waist when you look down from above. A puppy that tracks low on the chart but has good energy and body condition is usually just going to be a smaller adult. Talk to your vet if your puppy stops gaining for more than two weeks, loses weight, or has persistent diarrhea.
