The safe part
The pink flesh, with seeds removed, is safe for most dogs. A cup of diced watermelon has only about 45 calories, so it is one of the lighter treats you can give.
The parts to avoid
- Rind: tough and hard to digest. Big pieces can cause vomiting or an intestinal blockage, especially in small dogs.
- Black seeds: one or two won't matter, but a lot can clump in the gut. Seedless melons, or picking seeds out, avoids the problem.
- Flavoured or sweetened products: watermelon sweets, candy and drinks can contain sugar or xylitol.
How much
A few cubes for a small dog, a handful for a large one. Too much fruit at once can cause diarrhoea. Watermelon is a treat, not a substitute for fresh water on hot days.
Serving ideas
Freeze small cubes or blend the flesh and freeze it in an ice cube tray. Introduce it slowly if your dog has a sensitive stomach.
