That distinction matters on a phone call. Almonds are not the emergency that macadamia nuts are, but “not toxic” is not the same as “go ahead.”
Not toxic, still not safe
AKC groups almonds with the nuts dogs should not be given, separate from macadamia nuts, which have a documented poisoning syndrome. Sweet almonds do not carry that. What they carry is size, hardness, and fat.
Dogs do not chew nuts thoroughly. A whole almond often goes down intact, which is what turns a snack into a windpipe or intestinal problem rather than a digestion problem.
The three real risks
Choking and obstruction. Almonds are close to the wrong size for small and medium dogs. AKC flags obstruction as the reason to keep them off the treat list, and the oesophagus is as much of a risk as the gut.
Pancreatitis. Nuts are fat-dense. A dog with any pancreatitis history should not meet a new fatty extra without the veterinarian who already manages that dog.
Seasoning. Salted, smoked, and flavoured almonds add sodium, and some coatings add garlic or onion powder. See whether dogs can eat garlic if the packet was a savoury mix.
If the dog already ate some
A couple of plain almonds in a large dog is usually a watch-and-wait. Note the count, the seasoning, and the dog’s weight, then keep an eye on breathing, appetite, and stool for the next day or two.
Call sooner if the dog gags, retches without producing anything, strains, refuses food, or stands with a hunched back. Those are obstruction and pancreatitis signals, not gas.
