A simple dosing schedule
| Schedule | When | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Twice a day (every 12 h) | 8 am and 8 pm | Most mild allergy flare-ups |
| Three times a day (every 8 h) | 7 am, 3 pm, 11 pm | Only if your vet says so |
| Once, before an event | 30 to 60 minutes before a car ride | Motion sickness (ask your vet) |
How long it takes to work
Diphenhydramine is absorbed quickly. Most dogs show the effect within 30 to 60 minutes, and it lasts about 8 hours. Hives often settle within an hour or two. Itchy skin from long-term allergies often barely improves, which is a sign to see your vet rather than keep dosing.
When to stop and call the vet
- No improvement after 2 or 3 doses
- Swelling of the face or throat, noisy breathing, or collapse (go to an emergency vet now)
- Agitation, very fast heart rate, tremors, or straining to pee
- You've been giving it for more than a few days in a row

Frequently asked questions
Can I give my dog Benadryl every day?
Short courses of a few days are common for mild allergies, under a vetโs guidance. Daily long-term use should be discussed with your vet, because ongoing itching usually has a cause that other treatments handle better.
How long does Benadryl last in a dog?
About 8 hours for most dogs. Its half-life is short, so it is mostly cleared within a day.
I gave a second dose too soon. What now?
One early dose within the normal mg range is unlikely to cause harm in a healthy dog, but expect extra drowsiness. If you gave more than 4 mg/kg in total, or your dog seems agitated, call your vet or a pet poison line.
