How Great Danes grow
Gentle giant that thinks it is a lap dog. As a giant breed, a Great Dane is roughly half grown at about 6 months and reaches adult size at around 18 to 24 months. Fast growth raises the risk of bone problems in giant breeds, so feed a large-breed puppy food and never push for extra weight.
Feed a Great Dane puppy a food labeled for large-breed puppies (or "all life stages including growth of large size dogs"). These foods control calcium and calories so bones grow at a steady pace, which lowers the risk of hip and elbow problems.
Is my Great Dane puppy underweight or overweight?
The scale only tells half the story. Check your puppy's body condition: you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, and see a waist when you look down from above. A puppy that tracks low on the chart but has good energy and body condition is usually just going to be a smaller adult. Talk to your vet if your puppy stops gaining for more than two weeks, loses weight, or has persistent diarrhea.
