Why there's no simple conversion
People mature slowly over about 20 years. Dogs do it in about two. After that, a dog's remaining life is squeezed into 8 to 14 years depending on its size. So "dog years" aren't a fixed unit. They stretch in early life and shrink later, and they run faster for big breeds. The calculator reverses the AVMA size chart to give a fair comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How many dog years is 1 human year?
It depends on the dog’s age. In a dog’s first year, one calendar year equals about 15 human years. From age 3 onward, each human year matches about 4 to 7 "dog years" depending on size. There is no single conversion.
How old am I in dog years?
A 30-year-old person matches roughly a 3½-year-old medium dog. A 50-year-old matches about a 7¾-year-old medium dog or a 6-year-old giant breed.
