How long can a puppy hold it?
A common rule of thumb is about one hour per month of age, plus one, during the day, up to a maximum of around 6 to 8 hours for adults. A 2-month-old puppy can usually manage 2 to 3 hours awake; less when playing, more when asleep.
Always go out
- First thing in the morning
- Within 15 minutes after each meal
- Right after waking from a nap
- After play or excitement
- Last thing at night
- Every 1 to 2 hours in between, at first

What makes it work
Go to the same spot, stay calm, and reward within a second or two of finishing (a treat and praise). For accidents indoors, just clean up with an enzymatic cleaner; punishment teaches puppies to hide when they pee. A crate or pen sized so the puppy can lie down and turn around helps, because most puppies avoid soiling where they sleep. Most are reliable by 4 to 6 months, small breeds often later.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use puppy pads?
They help if you can’t get outside quickly, for example in a flat. Move them gradually toward the door and then outside.
My puppy pees very often. Is that normal?
Young puppies go a lot, but sudden increases, straining or accidents in a puppy who was doing well can signal a urinary infection. Ask your vet.
