House Rabbit Society’s diet page opens by correcting the cartoon: rabbits need more than carrots, and carrots should only ever be given in small quantities because of high sugar. Rabbits have a sweet tooth. Your job is to keep sugar from crowding out hay.
PDSA’s feeding page asks “Do rabbits love carrots?” and answers that many do, but carrots are not the healthiest treat because they contain lots of sugar and not much fibre. Small amounts, occasionally. PDSA’s myths page adds that a whole carrot is very high in sugar for teeth and full of calories for waistlines. Carrot tops are the better treat on that page.
We will not invent a homemade gram chart. Occasional and small is the published line. If stool softens after a new treat, stop and ask a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.
House Rabbit Society says rabbits need unlimited amounts of hay. It keeps the gut moving and helps wear teeth that never stop growing. Timothy, orchard, oat, and other grass hays suit adult rabbits. Alfalfa is for the young, nursing, or special cases a veterinarian names.
PDSA says around 85% of the diet should be hay and/or grass. Ideally unlimited. As a minimum, a bundle at least as big as the rabbit each day. Leafy greens and a measured nugget ration sit on top of that hay base. Fruit and root treats stay in the small file.
A rabbit that refuses hay for sugary snacks is not “picky.” That is a management problem. Pull the treats until hay wins again. Not eating at all is an emergency in rabbits.
PDSA’s myths page titles it plainly: “Myth: Carrots are good for rabbits.” Good for cartoons. Not as a staple for pets. Fresh greens and good quality hay every day are the nutrients rabbits need. The orange root is dessert.
