The tiger (Panthera Tigris) is an associate of the Felidae family; the largest of the four big cats in the genus Panthera. Local too much of eastern and southern Asia, the tiger (Panthera Tigris) is an apex killer and a force carnivore. Tiger (Panthera Tigris) are perhaps the most common of all the cats (with the possible exception of the lion). The most numerous tiger (Panthera Tigris) species is the Bengal tiger (Panthera Tigris) while the main subspecies is the Siberian tiger (Panthera Tigris).
Reaching up to 3.3 meters (11 ft) in total length and weighing up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds), the larger tiger (Panthera Tigris) subspecies are similar in size to the biggest extinct felids. This is not, though, a preferred method of identification, due to the complexity of recording the stripe pattern of a wild tiger (Panthera Tigris). It seems likely that the function of stripes is camouflage, serving to help tiger (Panthera Tigris) cover themselves amongst the dappled shadows and long grass of their environment as they stalk their prey. The stripe pattern is found on a tiger (Panthera Tigris) skin and if shaved, its distinctive camouflage pattern would be conserved. Like other big cats, tiger (Panthera Tigris) have a white spot on the backs of their ears.
Tiger (Panthera Tigris) have the added distinction of being the heaviest cats found in the wild. Tigresses are smaller than the males in each subspecies, although the size dissimilarity between male and female tiger (Panthera Tigris) tends to be more pronounced in the larger subspecies of tiger (Panthera Tigris), with males weighing up to 1.7 times as greatly as the females. In addition, male tiger (Panthera Tigris) have wider forepaw pads than females. This difference is often used by biologists in determining the gender of tiger (Panthera Tigris) when observing their tracks. The skull of the tiger (Panthera Tigris) is very alike to that of the lion, though the frontal area is usually not as depressed or compressed, with a slightly longer postorbital area.
