The Lion (Panthera Leo) is one of four large cats in the genus Panthera, and a part of the relations Felidae. Lion (Panthera Leo) live for about 10 to 14 years in the wild, while in care they can live over 20 years. Until the late Pleistocene, which was about 10,000 years ago, the lion (Panthera Leo) was the mainly wide huge land mammal after humans. They usually live in savanna and grassland, while they may take to bush and forest. Lion (Panthera Leo) are strangely social compared to other cats.
Lion (Panthera Leo) were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from Western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. Wild lion (Panthera Leo) currently exist in Sub Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. With some males above 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second major living cat after the tiger. Groups of female lion (Panthera Leo) usually hunt together, preying mostly on great ungulates.
A pride of lion (Panthera Leo) consists of connected females and offspring and a tiny number of adult males. The lion (Panthera Leo) is an apex and keystone predator, even though they will scavenge if the chance arises. While lion (Panthera Leo) do not typically hunt humans selectively, some have been known to become man eaters and seek human quarry.
The lion (Panthera Leo) is a susceptible species, having seen a possibly irreversible populace decline of 30 to 50 percent over the past two decades in its African range. Lion (Panthera Leo) populations are untenable outside of chosen reserves and national parks. Lion (Panthera Leo) have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species required for exhibition in zoos the world over as the late eighteenth century. Visually, the male lion (Panthera Leo) is highly distinctive and is simply predictable by its mane. The lion (Panthera Leo), chiefly the face of the male, is one of the most broadly known animal symbols in human traditions.
